After Tyler graduated from Handsworth (N.Van) in 2005 he spent 2 years at the College of Eastern Utah, a Division I member of the National Junior College Athletic Association. Last year he led the NJCAA nationally in average points per game with 28, had a 47% 3-point percentage and was 5th in free throw percentage at 88%. He was selected a first-team all-American in the NJCAA. "Tyler is a highly skilled player, a great shooter, an excellent ball handler, and has a high basketball I.Q.," said College of Eastern Utah head coach Bryon Zollinger. "He is a solid athlete who is built well and is quick. But, the thing that sets him apart from other players is his work ethic. He is constantly working to improve himself, and he is always in the weight room and on the floor getting his work in."

In 2007 Tyler moved on to the University of Utah, an NCAA Div. I school and a member of the Mountain West Conference, where he is the starting point guard.
